President Emmanuel Macron won't let Emily say "au revoir" to the City of Love for good.
After all, the Emily in Paris protagonist may find a new home in Italy during season five, but the French official knows where her heart truly is.
"We will fight hard," Macron told Variety in an interview published Oct. 9. "We will ask them to remain in Paris! Emily in Paris in Rome doesn't make sense."
Meanwhile, the Italian capital's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri isn't so keen on sending away Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, with a beret and baguette.
"Don't worry: Emily is doing very well in Rome," Gualtieri quipped on X Oct. 9 in Italian. "And then you can't control your heart: let's let her choose."
However, the city's mayor eventually shared exactly how he felt about pleas to keep Emily in Paris.
"Doesn't President Macron have more pressing matters to worry about?" he asked The Hollywood Reporter Roma. "I would like to believe, at least I would like to hope, that Macron was joking, because he ought to know that a production company like Netflix does not take orders from heads of state or make decisions based on political pressure."
Nonetheless, Gualtieri is honored to have Emily in their city and trusts Netflix's storyline.
"We see Emily's move to Rome as a confirmation that our city is becoming more and more important, and we are quite relaxed about Netflix production decisions," he explained. "They know what they are doing."
And the show's creator Darren Star emphasized that Emily might be in Italy in the upcoming season, but she isn't leaving France behind for good.
"Emily's going to have a presence in Rome," he told Netflix's Tudum last month. "It doesn't mean she's not going to be in Paris, but she's going to have a presence in Rome."
As for why Emily packed her bags for Italy? She's sent to open a new location for her boss' marketing agency Agence Grateau. And while she's there, it seems her budding romance with new boyfriend Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) will be at the forefront of this new chapter.
"Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance," Collins told Tudum. "We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time."
"I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection," she continued. "A lot of that's going to continue to play out next season."
