Musical prowess isn’t the only kind of game needed to succeed on “The Voice.”
Team Legend singers Brandon Montel, Taylor Deneen and Mac Royals dazzled during the final round of Knockouts Tuesday night with their silky vocals and feel-good performances of “Nobody Gets Me” by SZA, “Sweet Thing” by Rufus and Chaka Khan and “Lost Without U” by Robin Thicke, respectively.
During rehearsals, Royals was advised by coach John Legend to turn on the charm to convey the sultry tone of his performance. “When you think about staging, just connect with somebody,” Legend said. “Flirt with Gwen!”
Royals clearly did his homework, with coach Gwen Stefani later saying she felt the heat from the Arkansas vocalist onstage.
“Mac, were we locking eyes the entire performance? There was a point where I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ ” Stefani said, to which Royals coyly smiled. “Everything that you brought to that performance was exactly like something I would have watched on some Grammys performance.”
Royals’ heartthrob-level smoothness helped him clinch a Knockout victory, as Legend declared him the winner. Royals’ opponent Deneen also secured her place in the competition when Legend hit his save button to keep the Oklahoma City singer on Team Legend.
“Taylor’s a really special singer,” Legend said. “Her voice is so sweet, but when she goes for those big notes, it’s also really powerful.”
Here’s what else went down on Tuesday’s episode.
Lennon VanderDoes makes John Legend, Gwen Stefani cry with ‘moving’ performance
Team Niall’s Alexa Wildish, Julia Roome and Lennon VanderDoes tugged on the coaches’ heartstrings with emotional renditions of “Believe” by Cher, “Unstoppable” by Sia and “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz, respectively.
VanderDoes’ sweet cover of the Mraz ballad even moved Legend and Stefani to tears. Legend, who gushed over the Arizona singer’s “passionate” performance, struggled to give his critique as he continued to weep onstage.
“I thought of you as the underdog,” Legend told VanderDoes with tears streaming down his face. “I just felt you like beamed fully (as) yourself, and it felt so moving to me.”
Despite VanderDoes’ touching performance, the 27-year-old lost the Knockout to his opponent Wildish, who stunned coach Niall Horan with her folk reimagining of Cher’s techno-pop hit.
“Alexa is the most mind-blowing moment I’ve ever had on this show,” Horan said. “She is a one-in-a-million talent. She could potentially win this.”
